Once I used this I was like, “YES!” If I have to push something harder than usual, I can do it without sacrificing how it sounds. When I first started using this plugin, I didn’t really have anything in my personal arsenal that could do that. Good at the Glue - In my experiments with the UAD Manley Variable Mu, I’ve found that you can push this plugin pretty hard-without that undesirable sound you usually get when you over-compress material. In general, I like to use a slow attack and a slow release to get the best results out of this plugin. Like the Qes Labs hardware unit, the UAD Manley Variable Mu makes every song component sound like they’re complementing each other. What both of them do well is to bring all of the components of a song together, either on the mix buss or for mastering. The UAD Manley Variable Mu has a lot in common with our Qes Labs Variable GM tube stereo compressor. In Use - I like to keep in mind what gear we have in the studio that will translate well to the capabilities of a particular plugin.
